Login To Your Ancestry Account
Linking your DNA kit to your Ancestry family tree profile will give you access to special features at Ancestry that you don’t want to miss out on. Most importantly, once your DNA Kit is connected to your family tree profile, Ancestry will be able to show you how you may be related to your DNA matches, especially those matches that have good family trees. This is a super helpful feature, and it can save you a ton of time researching. If you don’t link your DNA kit to your family tree profile, you could lose out on some great hints.
Before you begin, make sure that you are logged in to the Ancestry account where you uploaded your DNA kit.
- Click on the “DNA” menu in the top navigation bar.
- Select the “Your DNA Results Summary” menu item from the drop-down menu.

- Select the “Settings” button. You’ll find this menu hiding on the right-hand side of the web page right underneath your profile picture. Although the button is called “Settings,” because you’ve already clicked on the “DNA” menu, this will take you to your DNA settings.

- Next, look for the “DNA and family tree linking” section on this webpage. Then, click anywhere on the “DNA Link” line. The whole line, from “DNA link” on the left to the “>” on the right is clickable. If you haven’t already linked your kit to your profile, it should say “unlinked” in the middle of this line, like it does below.

- Click the down arrow in the “Select” menu, and then pick the family tree that has your family tree profile in it. In my case, I picked the family tree called “Example Family Tree,” but you should see your own family tree here after you’ve selected it. If you have more than one family tree with your profile in it, and you’re not sure which one to use, the best one to choose is the one with the most complete and current version of your family tree. That way, Ancestry will always be able to check the most complete and current version of your family tree when it is trying to figure out how you are related to your DNA matches.

- Then, type in the name of the family tree profile to connect to the DNA kit and select it from the list. In my case, I typed Mark Thompson.

- And finally, click the “Link DNA Results” button to finish the job.

Congratulations! You’ve now linked your DNA results to your family tree profile. This will make sure that Ancestry give you much better hints when it’s trying to figure out how you are related to your DNA matches.
